Pat Horton - A Lifelong Champion for Cabarrus County Nonprofits
Pat Horton, a dedicated and lifelong resident of Cabarrus County, is no stranger to community service. After an impressive 53-year career in the financial services industry and serving on numerous nonprofit Boards, Pat joined the Board of Directors for the Greater Cabarrus Foundation. Her commitment to this new foundation reflects her deep-rooted belief in the power of community support and collaboration.
As a pillar of the community, Pat continues to focus on ensuring the success and sustainability of local organizations that serve the people of Cabarrus County.
A Commitment to Serving Her Community
Even in retirement, Pat’s dedication to her community remains unwavering. Born and raised in Cabarrus County, Pat's career spanned over five decades, where she played a vital role in fostering local economic growth and supporting countless community initiatives. Her contributions extend beyond her professional life; she has actively participated in various organizations, including the Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation, the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (RCCC) Board of Trustees, the Foundation of the Carolinas (Cabarrus County Chapter), and the United Way Board.
Throughout her career, Pat has taken on significant leadership roles in major community initiatives, including chairing the Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation’s Capital Campaign. Her leadership in this campaign was pivotal in raising critical funds to improve healthcare services for residents of Cabarrus County. Under her direction, the campaign helped expand healthcare resources and provide greater access to care for underserved populations. In addition to this, she has spearheaded several other initiatives that have strengthened the region’s nonprofit sector, demonstrating her tireless commitment to enhancing the quality of life for her fellow citizens.
In recognition of her commitment to the betterment of Cabarrus County, Pat was honored with the Citizenship of the Year Award by the Cabarrus Chamber in 2022, a testament to her lifelong dedication to improving the quality of life in her community.
Pat's passion for community service is evident in her decision to join the Greater Cabarrus Foundation Board. She sees this as an opportunity to continue giving back to the county she loves—a county that has shaped her life and career.
"As someone who's been fortunate to serve Cabarrus County for decades, it's important to me to support its continued growth. The Greater Cabarrus Foundation stands out because it focuses on empowering communities, fostering sustainability, and ensuring our future generations have the resources they need. Joe and I are proud to be a part of that effort," Pat shared.
Empowering Cabarrus County Communities
When it comes to supporting Cabarrus County, Pat and her husband Joe are all in. They love the Greater Cabarrus Foundation's laser-focus on helping the local community. By zeroing in on fundraising, grant-making, and collaboration with local agencies, the Greater Cabarrus Foundation can make a real impact in our county for many years to come.
“Joe and I are pleased to be contributors to the Greater Cabarrus Foundation. We value the organization’s commitment to providing financial support for the operational needs of agencies, ensuring they continue to thrive and expand their services as our community grows,” says Pat.
One thing Pat especially loves? The fact that the Foundation’s funds stay right here in Cabarrus County. It is like knowing your favorite local restaurant is sourcing its veggies from the farm down the road—it just feels right. Pat admires how the foundation is strategic about its grant-making, ensuring nonprofits can focus on what matters most: food security, housing, and healthcare, to name a few. These are key areas for empowering underserved communities, and Pat is all about making sure everyone has access to the tools they need to succeed.
A Focus on Sustainability and Long-Term Impact
Pat's big on sustainability—both in life and in community work. That is one of the main reasons she jumped at the opportunity to serve on the Greater Cabarrus Foundation Board of Directors. The Foundation’s endowment model is her favorite part. Why? Because it guarantees that the money donated today will keep helping people tomorrow—and for generations after that.
“I love the endowment piece of this board,” Pat says. “It means that when I am no longer here, the Foundation will still be here, serving the long-term needs of Cabarrus County. That is especially important to me.”
This sense of long-term impact really resonates with Pat. She knows that while the needs of the community are constantly changing, the Greater Cabarrus Foundation has the flexibility to evolve along with them. Whether it is teaching nonprofits how to thrive, leading workshops on organizational sustainability, or helping nonprofits grow their leadership, Pat is all in on helping these agencies adapt and succeed.
Gratitude and Giving Back
Pat’s passion for the Greater Cabarrus Foundation is not just about the here and now—it is rooted in deep gratitude for the opportunities and support she has received from her community over the years. “I am so thankful for this community,” Pat says. “Cabarrus County has allowed me to have a successful career, and I feel so much gratitude for all the opportunities my community has given me.”
Her commitment was recently honored when Uwharrie Bank, where she served as Market President, donated $25,000 to the Greater Cabarrus Foundation in recognition of her service to the community. This donation allows Pat to focus on areas that are meaningful to her and Joe, starting a seed fund for five organizations that have been close to their hearts.
Looking Ahead: A Shared Vision for Cabarrus County
Now, as a board member for the Greater Cabarrus Foundation, Pat is excited about the future. She is using her deep knowledge of the community and its needs to help guide the foundation’s initiatives. Her belief is that by working together, we can create a Cabarrus County that is flourishing, inclusive, and successful for all its residents.
"When I’m no longer here, I want to know that the funds I’ve helped raise will continue to be used to support our community," Pat reflects. "Together, we can address the most pressing needs of our community today and for the future."
By contributing her time, knowledge, and resources, Pat is helping to create a framework that will enable local nonprofits to thrive for years to come. And as a lifelong resident of Cabarrus County, she is proud to be part of an effort that will continue to benefit the community she holds dear.
