Chris Corsello: Investing Through Service and Expertise
What makes a community stronger? For Chris Corsello, it starts with people who are willing to invest their time, talents, and resources to make it better.
That investment can take many forms. For Chris, it has meant nearly 15 years at Cabarrus College of Health Sciences, serving on nonprofit boards, building relationships with community partners, and now sharing decades of leadership experience with local nonprofits through her role as an Interagency Consultant with Support Cabarrus, a division of the Greater Cabarrus Foundation.
Chris currently serves as Dean of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management at Cabarrus College of Health Sciences and is a member of the College's Executive Leadership Team. She has spent nearly 15 years with the College, helping support its growth while working alongside students, faculty, staff, and community partners. She also served as Board Chair for 1CAN and as a leadership council member for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Her path to Cabarrus County began when she and her wife, Joy, moved to North Carolina from Maine to be closer to family and enjoy a warmer climate. After growing up in Iowa and spending more than 20 years in the Boston area before moving to Maine, Chris was ready for North Carolina sunshine. What she found in Cabarrus County was something even more meaningful: a welcoming community that values education, service, and collaboration.
A Community Built on Collaboration
One of the things Chris appreciates most about Cabarrus County is its ability to maintain a strong sense of community while continuing to grow and evolve.
“Personally, I appreciate that people genuinely care about one another,” Chris shared. She sees that spirit through volunteerism, faith communities, neighborhood organizations, and local events. Professionally, she has experienced that same spirit through the county's collaborative approach.
“Organizations don't just coexist, they actively look for ways to partner and solve problems together,” she said.
That willingness to work together is also what Chris believes makes Cabarrus County great.
“The first thing that comes to mind is the people,” she said. “Cabarrus County is full of individuals who care deeply about their community and are willing to invest their time, talent, and resources to make it better.”
For Chris, community strength isn't simply measured by growth or economic development. It comes from nonprofits, businesses, educational institutions, healthcare organizations, government leaders, and residents working together toward a common goal. She has seen that firsthand through her work at Cabarrus College, her nonprofit service, and now through the Greater Cabarrus Foundation.
Supporting the Organizations That Serve Our Community
Chris's nonprofit experience has reinforced her belief in the important role nonprofits play in Cabarrus County.
Through her service with 1CAN and Big Brothers Big Sisters, she has seen how nonprofits are often closest to the challenges people face. They can respond quickly and creatively while connecting people, resources, and ideas.
“Strong communities aren't built by any one organization,” Chris said. “They're built through partnerships, and nonprofits often serve as the bridge that brings those partnerships together.”
She also recognizes the dedication of the people behind those organizations. Nonprofit leaders and volunteers care deeply about improving the quality of life for others, but passion alone isn't always enough to sustain an organization as it grows.
Chris points to strong infrastructure, governance, strategic planning, financial oversight, and succession planning as critical pieces of a healthy nonprofit. As organizations grow, their work becomes more complex, creating a need for mentorship, board development, and organizational support.
Her board service has also given her a deeper appreciation for the work that happens behind the scenes.
“Many people see the mission and the programs, but they don't always see the governance, planning, financial stewardship, fundraising, and risk management happening behind the scenes,” she said.
A strong nonprofit board, Chris explained, is much more than a group of volunteers attending meetings. It is responsible for helping ensure an organization remains healthy, ethical, financially stable, and focused on its mission.
Giving Back Through Expertise
After four decades in higher education leadership, Chris has developed experience in strategic planning, enrollment management, organizational effectiveness, leadership development, and change management.
Now, she is putting that experience to work for Cabarrus County's nonprofit community as an Interagency Consultant with Support Cabarrus.
“Becoming an Interagency Consultant provides an opportunity to share that experience with organizations that are doing important work in our community,” Chris said. “It's a meaningful way to give back by helping nonprofit leaders and boards strengthen their organizations so they can have an even greater impact.”
For Chris, professional expertise is an important form of philanthropy.
Financial contributions are essential, but sharing knowledge and experience can create lasting benefits. Helping a nonprofit improve its leadership practices, governance, strategic planning, or operations can strengthen the organization long after a consulting engagement ends.
“Sometimes a few hours of experienced guidance can help an organization avoid common pitfalls and focus more effectively on its mission,” she said.
Chris brings a career centered on organizational growth, strategic planning, team development, and student success to her consulting work. Her experience serving on nonprofit boards and working with a wide variety of community partners also gives her insight into the unique dynamics of community organizations.
She can help organizations establish goals, build strong teams, navigate change, and develop strategies for sustainable growth. Just as importantly, she approaches the work with a willingness to listen and help leaders identify solutions that fit their organization's unique culture and mission.
Nonprofits may seek guidance on areas such as board development, strategic planning, leadership transitions, organizational structure, stakeholder engagement, or managing growth. An outside perspective can give leaders an opportunity to step back from day-to-day operations and look at the bigger picture.
Chris believes that kind of organizational investment is directly connected to mission.
“Great programs rarely outlast weak organizations,” she said. “To sustain impact over time, nonprofits need strong leadership, effective governance, sound finances, and a clear strategy.”
Strengthening an organization, she explained, isn't separate from supporting its mission. It is what allows that mission to grow, adapt, and continue serving the community well into the future.
Everyone Has Something to Give
One of Chris's hopes is that nonprofit leaders who work with an Interagency Consultant gain confidence, new perspectives, practical tools, and a trusted thought partner.
She also hopes more professionals recognize that their own knowledge and experience can be a meaningful way to give back.
“Many people assume nonprofits primarily need financial support, when in reality they often need guidance, mentorship, and specialized expertise,” Chris said. “Professionals sometimes underestimate the value of their own knowledge because what comes naturally to them may be transformational for someone else.”
Her advice to someone who wants to share their skills with a local nonprofit is simple: start by reaching out.
“You don't have to make a long-term commitment right away,” she said. “Every organization has challenges and opportunities, and sometimes the expertise you take for granted may be exactly what they need.”
For Chris, the reward is seeing people and organizations reach their potential. Whether supporting students, mentoring colleagues, or assisting nonprofit leaders, she enjoys helping others identify opportunities and achieve their goals. When an organization becomes stronger and more effective, the benefits extend beyond that organization to the entire community.
Building a Stronger Future for Cabarrus County
Cabarrus County's continued growth presents both opportunities and challenges for nonprofits.
Chris sees opportunities to attract new resources, volunteers, partnerships, and innovative ideas while expanding the impact of local organizations. At the same time, increased growth can bring greater demand for services, making organizational capacity, future leadership, and strong partnerships even more important.
She believes collaboration will remain essential.
“No single organization can solve complex community challenges alone,” Chris said. “The strongest solutions emerge when different sectors bring their unique perspectives, expertise, and resources to the table.”
It is a philosophy Chris has experienced throughout her own work in Cabarrus County, and one she continues to put into practice through her service.
What gives her hope for the future? Once again, it comes back to the people.
Chris continues to see individuals and organizations stepping forward to address challenges and support one another. Dedicated nonprofit leaders, engaged businesses, strong educational institutions, supportive foundations, and committed community members create a powerful combination.
And Chris believes everyone has something they can contribute.
“You don't have to be a nonprofit expert to make a difference,” she said. “Every person has knowledge, skills, and perspectives that can help an organization succeed.”
When people share their time, talents, and expertise, Chris believes the impact reaches far beyond a single project or program. It strengthens individual organizations and, ultimately, the entire community.
“Passion often starts a nonprofit, but strong leadership, effective governance, and community collaboration are what allow that mission to endure and grow.”
Through her work, her nonprofit service, and her willingness to share what she has learned throughout her career, Chris Corsello is doing her part to invest in that future, one organization and one community partnership at a time.
