GCF Launches Cabarrus Spark to Connect Philanthropy with Strategic Nonprofit Capacity Building
The Greater Cabarrus Foundation (GCF) is proud to announce the launch of Cabarrus Spark, an innovative capacity-building grant program that connects philanthropic investors with vetted, high-impact projects designed to strengthen the organizational infrastructure of nonprofit agencies serving Cabarrus County.
Rather than providing traditional programs or operating support, Cabarrus Spark focuses on the systems, leadership, and organizational capacity that enable nonprofits to grow their impact for years to come. Every project is carefully scoped by Support Cabarrus, the Foundation's capacity-building division, reviewed and approved by the Greater Cabarrus Foundation, and presented to community investors with clearly defined outcomes and funding goals.
"Cabarrus Spark represents a new way of thinking about philanthropy in Cabarrus County," said Cam Cruickshank, Ph.D., President & CEO of the Greater Cabarrus Foundation. "We have learned that the strongest nonprofits are built on strong leadership, sound governance, effective systems, and long-term planning. Through Cabarrus Spark, we're giving community investors the opportunity to fund the behind-the-scenes work that allows nonprofit organizations to serve more people, respond to growing needs, and remain resilient for generations to come."
Cabarrus Spark is designed for donors and community investors seeking strategic, measurable community impact. Every project undergoes a rigorous planning process before it is ever presented for funding. Support Cabarrus works directly alongside each nonprofit to identify organizational needs, define a clear scope of work, establish measurable outcomes, and develop a realistic budget. The Greater Cabarrus Foundation then reviews every project for charitable appropriateness, feasibility, and community impact before making it available for funding.
"This is capacity building done differently," said Jennifer Delaney, Director of Capacity Building Services for Support Cabarrus. "We don't simply identify a challenge and walk away. We work alongside nonprofit leaders from project design through implementation, ensuring every investment is strategic, measurable, and focused on building stronger organizations. Community investors can be confident that every project has already been thoughtfully developed and is ready to create meaningful, lasting change."
Cabarrus Spark launches with three inaugural projects that address critical organizational needs within local nonprofits.
The first project supports the Community Free Clinic of Cabarrus County, which has provided free healthcare to uninsured adults since 1994.
Through Cabarrus Spark, Support Cabarrus will work with the clinic's board and leadership team to strengthen governance, improve board alignment, and build greater fundraising confidence and participation through structured education and engagement. The project has a funding goal of $15,000.
"For more than 30 years, our focus has been ensuring uninsured adults have access to quality healthcare," said Penny Aronson, Executive Director of the Community Free Clinic of Cabarrus County. "Cabarrus Spark gives us the opportunity to strengthen the leadership and governance behind that mission. By investing in our board's effectiveness and fundraising capacity today, we're building a stronger organization that can continue serving patients well into the future."
The second project supports Present Age Ministries, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing the sexual abuse, exploitation, and trafficking of teen girls while providing holistic care for identified survivors.
Support Cabarrus will partner with the organization to develop a strategy for expanding its evidence-informed curriculum, strengthen leadership capacity, improve donor engagement and storytelling, and provide grant strategy and oversight. The project has a funding goal of $20,000.

"Cabarrus Spark allows us to equip our leadership with tools while strengthening systems that will help us reach more young women, deepen our impact, and sustain our mission for years to come."
The third project supports Elder Orphan Care, whose Safe and Loved at Home program helps adults, ages 60 and older, who are aging alone to remain safe and independent in their own homes.
Through Cabarrus Spark, Support Cabarrus will build volunteer management systems that reliably translate community interest into meaningful client impact, and provide monthly bookkeeping services to support financial operations, compliance, and reporting, helping build long-term organizational sustainability. The project has a funding goal of $12,000.

"Cabarrus Spark gives us the opportunity to strengthen the systems and financial infrastructure behind our mission so we can serve more older adults while building a sustainable organization for the future."
One of the unique features of Cabarrus Spark is that it allows multiple donors to come together to fund a single nonprofit capacity-building project. Similar to a community crowdfunding platform, philanthropic investors can contribute at a level that is meaningful to them, knowing their gift joins with others to fully fund a strategic initiative that will strengthen a local nonprofit.
This collaborative approach makes philanthropy more accessible than ever. Instead of requiring one donor to fund an entire project, Cabarrus Spark enables individuals, families, businesses, and donor-advised fundholders to make smaller investments that collectively create significant, lasting impact. Every contribution helps move a carefully vetted project closer to completion while giving donors confidence that their investment supports a clearly defined need with measurable outcomes.
Unlike traditional crowdfunding, every Cabarrus Spark project has already been vetted, professionally scoped, and approved by the Greater Cabarrus Foundation before it is presented for community investment.
Following project completion, community investors receive an outcomes report highlighting what was accomplished, what changed, and the measurable impact of their investment.
