Celebrating the Power of Service: National Volunteer Week
Each year, National Volunteer Week (April 19–25, 2026) offers a meaningful opportunity to recognize the individuals who give their time, talents, and passion to strengthen communities. Here in Cabarrus County, it is also a reminder of something deeper. Service is not just something we do. It is part of who we are.
At the Greater Cabarrus Foundation, our mission is to mobilize philanthropy that strengthens nonprofits and drives lasting change in Cabarrus County. Volunteers are essential to that mission. They are the connectors, the doers, and the champions behind the scenes who help turn vision into impact.
Why Volunteerism Matters
Nonprofit organizations across Cabarrus County are addressing some of our community’s most pressing needs, from education and healthcare to housing, food security, and workforce development. While financial support is critical, the time, skills, and leadership provided by volunteers are equally important.
Volunteers help organizations expand their reach, strengthen their operations, and deepen their impact. Whether serving on a board, mentoring a student, supporting an event, or sharing professional expertise, each contribution plays a role in building a stronger, healthier community.
That spirit of service is what draws so many individuals to get involved. For Ashley Sedlak-Propst, a volunteer with the Greater Cabarrus Foundation, the opportunity to support local nonprofits is both personal and meaningful.
“When I found out there was a foundation specifically dedicated to supporting the nonprofits right here in Cabarrus County, I was so excited,” she said. “Nonprofits are my passion… I wanted to be part of it.”
The Next Generation of Changemakers
Volunteerism in Cabarrus County isn’t just strong today; it’s building momentum for the future. Young people across our community are stepping forward with purpose, bringing fresh energy and new perspectives to the work of service.
Chloé Lockhart, one of the Foundation’s newest interns and a sophomore at West Cabarrus High School, is part of this next generation of changemakers.
“Through volunteering, I’ve helped strengthen my community while also growing as an individual,” she said. “I’ve developed stronger communication skills and a deeper sense of belonging, which has inspired me to stay involved and continue giving back.”
Her experience reflects the powerful impact that volunteerism can have, not only on the community, but on the individuals who choose to serve. By creating opportunities for young people to engage, we are helping build a future generation that is invested, compassionate, and committed to making a difference.
A Community Built on Service
What makes Cabarrus County truly special is the collective commitment to showing up for one another. Volunteers across the county give their time in countless ways, often without recognition, but always with purpose.
During National Volunteer Week, we take a moment to celebrate those individuals and the impact they make every day. Their contributions strengthen nonprofits, support families, and help create a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
